Choosing a theme is not a hard task. There are thousands of WordPress themes bloggers can choose from. Finding a good theme however is tricky. There are many qualities that new inspired bloggers should pay attention to when it comes to choose a good theme.

1. Design – First impression matters, and this is even true for blogs. When it comes having a good design, it does not mean the blog should be colorful or complicated, but reflects the message that the blog is trying to convey. If your blog is for personal use, a free theme is more than sufficient. If however, your goal is to make money from your blog, you may want to go with a premium theme or a custom theme in order to make yours look as professional as possible.

2. Coding – Coding of a theme can affects your search engine’s ranking. There are many themes that have bloated coding. This is especially true for free themes. When it comes to SEO, how your theme is laid out affects how search engines see your site.

3. Usability – When it comes to choosing a good theme, it’s best to avoid complicated designs. Readers accessibility and user experience can be compromised due to complicated and unnecessary design options.

4. Customizable – Though this option is not essential, it’s best to look for themes that are flexible in customization, without the needs of HTML + CSS + PHP knowledge.

5. Support – Some free themes provide limited support. Premium themes usually come with support. It’s recommended that you check for the availability of this service, just in case things go wrong when you have made purchase for your premium theme.

6. Pricing – I was actually hesitant to list this, but I guess it’s futile not to. However, I would caution that while price is always a factor, you should realize that you often get what you pay for, although it’s not necessarily true that the most expensive themes are the best. If you only started blogging, custom made theme is not a feasible choice. I recommend premium theme for starters.

There are many reasons why many big blogs spend thousands of dollars just to customize their theme. Make sure to take your time to choose a good theme for your blog.
